He Is With Me, So Why Should I Call Him Near? Poem by Mohammad Younus

He Is With Me, So Why Should I Call Him Near?

He is with me—so why should I call him near?
He dwells within my heart—where else should I seek him?
Today, let me return to the beginning,
To the day of Alast, when souls first knew their Lord.
Let me behold him, not in hidden chambers,
But face to face, as he truly is—
Unveiled, unbound, beyond all form and name.
Let me never see myself as separate from him,
For he has no like, no unlike—only One.
Why then should I pray for a meeting?
He is already here, closer than my breath,
Closer than the pulse that beats within my veins.

Let me witness him in the world's unfolding—
In the bloom of the rose, the song of the nightingale,
In the vastness of the sky, the stillness of the stone.
Let me not say he is where I cannot see,
For he is the seer and the seen, the seeker and the sought.
If I wish to walk to him, it is he who stirs within my chest.
If I long to sit with him, he is already seated—
Gazing at himself through my very eyes.

Not a moment passes without his remembrance,
Yet truly, it is he who remembers himself.
For he is Zikr, Zaakir, and Mazkoor—
The remembrance, the rememberer, and the remembered.
But this truth is revealed to me alone—
It is his story, his song, his eternal dance.
How can I speak it aloud? How can I contain it?
This heart—his sanctuary, this mad heart—
Longs to unveil his presence in every petal,
In every breath, in every beat of existence.

But today, the sun burns fiercely overhead—
Its light so blinding, its heat so consuming.
I see not even my own shadow,
For in his radiance, all else dissolves.
And yet, in this dissolution, I find my wholeness.
In this surrender, I discover my freedom.
For he is with me—always, endlessly—
So why should I call him near?
