Heart Of A Child Poem by I M Swan

Heart Of A Child

Little girl with heart pure and sweet
Running around on bare little feet
Nobody knows the dark secrets she bares
Behind innocent smiles, she thinks nobody cares

Wishes and dreams made by light of the day
Are shattered by nightmares and carried away
With silent screams and tears in her eyes
Her little heart hurts as part of it dies

To escape from the madness, in her mind she does run
Where nightmares can't follow, as he has his fun
In a dark little room with a shiny dark box
She's safe for a while, behind a door with a lock

She sits in a corner with tears on her face
And tries to forget why she's here in this place
The darkness wraps her in peaceful restraint
As the beat of her heart, slows without a complaint

Wiping her face, the box draws her near
Curious she approaches without any fear
The box on the table, just barely in reach
She opens the lid and inside takes a peek

A red velvet lining, so soft and so fine
Sits in the box the color of wine
Without any thought, she knows what its for
As she takes a deep breath and looks at the door

Standing on tip toes with eyes opened wide
She smiles as she places her heart there inside
Closing the lid and locking it tight
She makes her way home, back into the night

Alone in the dark, the demon departs
He can steal all the innocence, but can't take her heart
A special daughter to some you might say
But her heart holds a secret, it'll keep to this day
