Hero Par Excellence - Poem by Jayatissa Liyanage

Grinding roar of ear deafening tone
Hair rousing creaky monster wheels
Rumble ‘n roll over on earth griping lugs
Quivering palms watch, sans anything else to do

Showering lead pellets from AK 47s
Erected a wall with night cement, dark and thick
One after another, on coming steel demons
Fuming double barrels pointed like giant horns

Enclosed from all sides by steel armor
Roaring ‘n groaning fiend advancing at pace
Getting closer and closer to cordoned camp
Overwhelmed by howl of blood thirst fanatics

Barricades turned weed culms jumbo trampled
Response in opposition, at large, no peril to them
Peninsula besieged by the monster, loathing
Appeared from nowhere, over barricaded front

Corporal Gamini, lean ‘n lanky physique soul
Seeing inevitable eventuality to come soon
Taking a gallant decision, keeping up to mom’s feed
Made his heroic move forward for mother nation’s sake

Twitching muscles and boiling blood in veins
Enlivened his guts, to the next blatant step
Massive tank, he realized, nothing but explosives
If blown up inside, it’s the end of an episode

Off came his weapon, grabbed few more grenades
Looking sharp at the monster, tightening palm grip
Dashed off like a lion, to meet the combatant
Lest impenetrable monster took his comrades alive

Clinging on Gamini dumped the stuff from above
Unmistakably in to the belly, of the greedy sprite
He was so thrilled, and too hasty to celebrate
Jumped off, letting flames do the job, in a moment

Gamini, in a shower of bullets bid farewell to nation
Never to rise again, having accomplished his mission
Every breathing son ‘n daughter of the mother land
Salutes from heart ‘o heart, at his monument

Poet's Notes about The Poem

True story. If our hero Gamini did not take that bold step in the name of the nation, that night there could have been a total massacre. Gamini Kularathna is a Hero in the heart of hearts of ours, for ever. Pix - Curtsy FB

A very intense and amazing story of a lone hero, sacrificing his own life for so many others. Gut wrenching poem, explaining the whole ordeal, it must have been a very scary time for all those people. Thank God for one man who never thought of himself, just his fellow man. Such a powerful description of war up close. Thank you for sharing. RoseAnn (Report) Reply

Such daring.... such self sacrificing love.... will definitely make any one adorable! Unfortunately that young soldier got blasted out by the enemy's shower of bullets! The freedom of any country is got and sustained by the valour and blood of how many such known and unknown heroes! Let us bow our heads in reverence before these great martyrs! A moving story and a powerfulwrite! (Report) Reply
