Your horse no longer has legs, your body has lost its head.
The excitement of the chase, the take,
Is what thrills you.
You’ve lost your mind highway man, but gained a friend.
Her willingness and acceptance,
She dotes on you.
As you drew up to her carriage, you could feel it rising.
Your composure hardens, no amateur
Shall take you.
Her dress is made out of wigs, she’s prepared for your speech.
Only in her mind do you keep on your gloves,
She wants you.
Highway man takes what he wants, his horse assists the deed.
Her jewels were so precious and bright,
You liked her curiosity didn't you?
I heard her whisper to the horses to stop, she knew he would come.
This poem is a kind of stream of consciousness, and although I find the language and movement very vivid., I'm unclear about the narrative, but the poem is about the suddenness of desire and the curious certitude which accompanies it so that what appears to be an impulsive act from an outside perspective is really a response to a readiness within. The speaker is thoroughly confident, not because she is in control of events but because she senses THIS IS MY MOMENT! THIS IS WHAT I WANT! But in the last few lines the highway man seems totally incapable of responding to such a woman of desire. He's just a boor. And she could have conferred wonders upon him had he been ready to receive them.
