His Cornelius Balbus

A Roman name
that sounds more like a condition
makes you wonder if it was his cornelius balbus,
not Cornelius Balbus, his friend,
that held Caesar back from protocolling,
from rising to receive his honorific decrees
from the Senate -
if it was his cornelius balbus, not his friend,
that hastened his end.
