His Leather Jacket Poem by Kelly Boutin

His Leather Jacket

Winter's cold is drawing near
But my Darling isn't here
To keep me warm

I lean against the wall, all alone
Holding both my hands that are empty
A siren wails down the road
I turn my head to have a peek
When I turn back I'm not alone
A leather jacket lies beside me

Where it came from isn't a mystery
But when I turned his spirit came
And left it there

A man died out in the street
By a truck he was hit
Who he was, I couldn't see
My Darling, he could have been
By his breath he ceased to be
I'll never get to thank him

A newspaper came my way one day
Saying the man was ok
They had gotten him to breath

I still don't know who he is
But he gave me his jacket
So I'm alive when he was dead
He wanted me to have it
He gave his life with a kiss,
He gave away his jacket

Somewhere in my my search of years
A Thunder truck comes driving by
It takes a double-take and turns
The driver stops and says, 'Hi'
I see his face and see his tears
I open the door and jump inside

I put my arms around his waist
And kiss his sweet, tear-stained face
I thank him for the jacket

I wrap the jacket around his shoulders
It never fit me anyway
I know my long wait is over
I know we'll both be safe
As long as we are together
As long as I have him near me

Now I never get cold, even in the storms
Because my Baby is always there to keep me warm
With his leather jacket.
