His Wish Poem by maria guzvic

His Wish

Resolute in his wish to be honourable
He was determined to take on the war
A young man, he enlisted and trained long hard years
If called upon, felt he owed his country the fight

Never a question of duty or allegiance
Salient endeavours to bring out the best in his men
Working hand in hand as close as brothers
Horrors that entrenched in their sight

Prevailing fears lived with each and every soldier
Would today be the last they saw morn
Hazardous treks over mountains were atrocious
They held to each other through the black of the night

The biggest danger he fought was for his family
At home despondent and glued to the news
Not knowing the circumstance of their loyal boy
But understanding the nature of his plight

Just like him, to have taken the time to compose
Loving notes to be opened in exceptional case
His fretting parents were scalded to put on brave face
His demise occurred because he was in the right

Tearfully she opened the note written by the love of her life
Inconsolable in her loss and her thoughts
A young woman who had promised to cross the threshold of wedlock
Had to keep his memory held bright

Not sombre, he wrote and told of his love
Of the glory he felt in his mind
Forgive him, he asked for taking his presence away but
To always think of him in impassioned light
