Home Sweet Home Poem by Edmund V. Strolis

Home Sweet Home

Rating: 5.0

Mandela had his prison garden
To keep him planted on this earth
And from the good earth that he tended
He reaped the bounty that he sowed

For all of earth is but one garden
And time again will make it so
This home of ours is always growing
Life in motion will never slow

After humans make their final bow
What a shaggy planet this will be
Millions of years will come and go
With all new faces on land and sea

Indeed we are all such a tiny part on this ever changing planet. Some have found a perfect balance and even when the odds are against some as in the likes of Nelson he showed the world how with just a positive frame of mind anything that appears useless can be turned around into something so positive and even change a nation in its wake. It didnt last long though unfortunately being blatently disregarded by the new president Zuma. How fast things can change and completely disappear. Life continues to change and replace and those who do have such a massive impact in our lives should never be forgotten. Thank you for this very profound poem of how life changes and the impact we have.99% may be erased but the 1% must live always. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on life and its balance

I can't help but wonder the degree to which your life in and travels from Africa had upon you. What a unique perspective to have to have grown within a culture so different. Able to see the differences and perhaps more importantly the commonality. Yet these influences alone can't explain your ability to write so eloquently. THAT ultimately is all you.

This home of ours is always growing Life in motion will never slow The whole poem is a gem, though i have quoted only a couple of lines. A reflective write. This planet n mankind together make life. And to imagine this planet without humans is truly an awful thought. But history tells us how people came n went, how civilizations were buried n their remains are dug out. And these relics from the past n the ruins make us pause n reflect on the transitoriness of life.10

Well thank you Nosheen. As per usual I go against the grain and before long I may no readers at all. In this poem I make the connection with Mandela and his long imprisonment and how keeping his garden kept him going for all of the years. Then I convey the fact that all of the world is one immense living thing and that despite the individuals calls to save the earth we are small and transitory and no matter what damage we do the earth will heal and become shaggy and consume all of the human monuments to their existence. Millions of years will erase us completely. I say take care of the planet of course but remember 99% of all that has lived has expired and the remaining 1% is in constant flux so all that lives will die. I am at odds with the environmentalist that seem oblivious to this and would rather put the well being of their fellow man, woman and child's needs below the feel-good abstract concepts of saving a planet that will do just fine without us. So you see Nosheen I will not be popular but I will always have time for a stranger and will do my part working to keep my corner of the world clean, safe and happy.

Thank you first of all for your kind acknowledgement. The thought occurred to me that looking upon the desert ruins of expired civilizations. Places once dominant and vital crumble and surrender to time and gravity. Nature prevails and always will. I say if you wish to be good stewards of the planet start with your neighbor or a stranger. The earth will consume all civilizations in time and nature will return to blot out all of the important, smooth and shiny places. She did well before us and she will do so in the future. The time is now for us to tend to our personal gardens and water them each day.
