Hostel Life Poem by Asit Kumar Sanyal

Hostel Life

Rating: 5.0

The home is sweet,
Hostel sweeter
Life in hostel slightly different
Great blessing of it... independence
Here life is glorious
Full of opportunities
One can choose friends as wishes.

One may acquire many good qualities
From the hostel fellows
Hostel provides nice atmosphere for study
Weaker students get help
From friends and seniors
Hostel life not only develops spirit
of healthy competition
but also teaches mutual cooperation.

It has limited draw backs too
Freedom of hostel leads few astray
They fail to choose good companions
An ill-managed hostel
Spoils the lives of inmates
but I was very lucky
stayed in a good hostel
Paying the reasonable rates.

Very insightful, focused and factual. Work of a sober mind. Thanks for sharing.

I think the hostels you describe are unique to India. I have stayed at youth hostels while travelling internationally, but I did not sense the camaraderie you describe, and I never thought of hostels as a place for study. I like the idea of staying in a hostel for a period of intensive study, with chances to socialize during rest times. Perhaps hostels in India are located near pilgrimage sites, and groups of friends and relatives sometimes go there in groups. I once saw a film by Satyajit Ray about a group of friends staying at a hostel in a resort area.

Very true! Though sometimes we miss our home, there is a kind of thrill for life in the hostels! We gain adaptability and the ability to move with people! When people with different talents are pooled together under one roof, it leads to greater sharing and enrichment! Bonds with friends become thicker..... Altogether it is a time of formation though greater freedom sometimes can lead to indiscipline in the case of some! This poem has revived the memories of my hostel life!
