How Do I Get There? Poem by Dónall Dempsey

How Do I Get There?

Once & once only...

I caught a glimpse
of a blue so fleeting

that it fished & flashed

before I could be certain that I had even

...seen what I had see.

Still - in my mind
(and forever)

the kingfisher burns
brillantly blue.

Once & only once...

you walked into a room
& spoke
(but did not speak to me)

and soon
(too soon)

you walked out of that room
(as easily as you had entered)

my heart...

before I could be
certain that I had even

...felt what I had felt.

That was all you had to tod.

You were kingfisher
burning brillantly blue.
