How Many Bridges Do I Have To Cross Poem by Mario, Lucien, Rene Odekerken

How Many Bridges Do I Have To Cross

Footsteps echo on worn wood,
one bridge behind, another ahead.
The river below does not answer,
only moves, relentless, unchanged.

Some bridges sway with the wind,
some crumble beneath the weight,
some stretch so far
the other side is only a whisper.

I keep walking,
counting crossings, losing count.
Perhaps the last bridge
is the one I do not see.
