How Pathetic We Are Poem by John W. McEwers

How Pathetic We Are

Rating: 5.0

Look
See us there in the courtyard?
My arms 'round your belly
and you with a smile and corsage

and we never left prom for two years
we danced slow dances in my apartment
and i was happy

look,
see us there at the park?
walking Jimbo on his nylon leash
wrapped once, twice, carefully 'round your wrist
as he pulled ahead, forcing us into happy unknowns

and we never left that park for two years
we walked circles around the apartment
and we were happy

look,
you got married yesterday

look,
it wasn't me

look,
I'm never smiling
