Hunting Lessons Poem by Larry Schreckengost

Hunting Lessons

Bear in mind, throughout my time
I have never been inclined
To leave a cast shadow behind
Hiking to or from my hunting blind

My father's lessons I obey
Once on stand, stay all day
I must always stay stay stay
And never let the Whitetail know
When I come or where I go

Pack in well before first light
Allow the owl to call my night
Trust in my lamp
To guide me safely back to camp

And never leave my stand unmanned
Until holding antlers In my bloody hands
Dragging venison across the land
