Larry Schreckengost Poems

We had a dachshund who loved digging holes
Seldom seen him without mud on his nose
Must be related to some breed of mole
This dog and I each had our established roll
...

Leaning against a maple red
Breathing crisp fall air
I strain to see through window's glare
And ever-present tear
...

I do enjoy being heard
Listening to my spoken word
If one terrible day, a choice
My Life or my voice
...

Begin, a melody within
Tell the story side to side
Then end to end
Accomplish this with little pen
...

Last night Jack Frost
Carved his icy name
Across our window pane
The fire built to match the night
...

I think it's great
That you want a snake
And go against advice
Still you might be right
...

At the crest of a steep hollow
Is where I met this noble fellow
An Alabama pine of tremendous girth
Laid out dead, upon the earth
...

I roam the forest vast
Where wild sumac blocks my path
And thorny briars cut and slash
As sky grows dark with smoke and ash
...

Poems are the whispers in the breeze
Mingling with shivering trees
The rising flash
Of a campfire's ash
...

Oh thank you for my new boots
This pair will surely see good use
To have had these in my passionate youth
When nature filled my dreams
...

Now that's GREAT
You've caught a snake
Against my best advice
Have you thought about the mice
...

By our back door, we have a bougainvillea tree
That presently holds a nest for three
I've named the avian parents Mood and Prude
Occasionally they can be kinda rude
...

From brambles, fields, and Forest near
Her melody lends Christmas cheer
The simple sonnet of a dove
A reminder of our Father's love
...

Hail to all good stewards of holiday cheer
The future of Christmas may bring you to tear
I have troubling news concerning an elf
And there's no way, I can save Kris Kringle myself
...

Sea otters float this bay
Past mountains draped in fog
Silver clouds kneel to greet us
Where ice runs fast like dog
...

Your writing gives me pause
I believe this was your poem's cause
Lust and Love are the wings of a dove
Neither one may fly above
...

Looking down an iron sight
At the deer, I intend to smite
The bullet travels at blistering speed
A generous distance to discharge its deed
...

Bear in mind, throughout my time
I have never been inclined
To leave a cast shadow behind
Hiking to or from my hunting blind
...

So you think you'll try to catch me
I'm pretty sure you won't
And to be perfectly honest
I'd prefer you don't
...

Breakfast in our backyard
Rows of tulips standing guard
Newspaper and a cup of tea
Shared it with a bumble bee

Unlikely Pair

We had a dachshund who loved digging holes
Seldom seen him without mud on his nose
Must be related to some breed of mole
This dog and I each had our established roll
Digging and filling until the dinner bell tolls

Under the windmill, at the back of our farm
Lives a fussy old groundhog with one broken arm
She lives in a burrow that keeps her quite warm
Bouquets of wildflowers bring her home charm

Our heads we did scratch
Till the answer was hatched
We thought this pair perfectly matched

The groundhog cried her arm was too sore
Adding she could barely dig anymore
Dear Groundhog, If you have but a small space on your floor
We know a dog that's perfect for this chore

It's been forever since we've tripped in a hole
Or walked around the yard doing damage control
Occasionally we see them digging on the hill
'Neath the old windmill amid wild dill

Larry Schreckengost Quotes

Flower pots line the walk Begonias giggle when they talk

Poetry well applied Should warm your heart inside

In jack-o'-lantern's glowing light Little children squeal with fright

Horses are jumping and pretending they're deer A new kind of Christmas we're having this year

To write poetry Is to be a peeping frog Where all the poets Share a great old log And lose their voice in the fog

Truth wears purple socks
