I Am An English Teacher Poem by Ivan Chizurum Ezeigbo

I Am An English Teacher

When the rabbit ran behind those grasses under the mango tree
When a small yellow bird flew across the scenic window view
And the parrot on top of the palm tree just keeps the music on
It was all a play to remember
A memento of life so small
When the rabbit was a roach hiding in the sofa
And the little bird, the treacherous tyrants of mosquitoes flying towards you
And the parrot, a disturbing neighbourhood that show no regard
See, what a discrepancy
Of the literature of yesterday and the poetry of today
Life as a teacher in the village sunny roof and in the airy urban setting
For one reason, I regret leaving the roachy atmosphere
To this gaudily, starry setting that sparked my love
The love of a rural English teacher for such scenic atmosphere
And every star and beauties in it
But one star in particular I regretted I loved
Even from my very first day when he held my hand
A young English student with such amusing boldness and attractive courage
Making no defiance for his actions except that he liked his new English teacher
So he told everyone whose curiousity wanted a drink
I, in the other hand, he voiced the same
No not the same
This time he loved
My curiousity has been thirsty but I kept it that way for a fast
But not for long because I couldn't hold on any longer
Not after he drew me into the library, hiding us behind a shelf
Kissing me with those masculine hands on my waist
I gasped for breath after what looked like a superb adventure and experience
Then my heart let go my curiousity
Does every good thing come with a price?
What price am I to pay today?
With the dilemma of a good English teacher or a village instructor in love
In love with a billonaire's son
No, actually, with my own English student
