I Am Love Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

I Am Love

I am nothing so selfish as passion.
Nothing so selfless as sacrifice.
Nothing so lasting as loyalty.
Nothing so fleeting as lust.

I am as mighty as a mother.
I am as helpless as a lover.
I am as restless as a seeker.
I am as patient as a sage.

Come to me in your sorrow.
Come to me in your doubt.
Come to me with your arms out
And I will shelter you in my house.

Its walls are built of empathy.
Its roof is tiled with hope.
Its furnace burns with brotherhood.
Its porch light calls you home.

So come in for a cup of tea.
Maybe stay for supper.
Let me get the guest room ready.
Settle in till summer.

I've been sitting here as dusk sets in
On a chilly autumn evening
Contemplating solitude
Pondering the meaning

Of living life deliberately
Of exposing what's concealed.
Of banishing the trivial
And treasuring the real.

But tonight this goal feels hollow.
As I sit here all alone.
Polishing my reveries
Like so many lifeless stones.

They must be sung.
They must be heard.
They must be received.
They must be believed.

Or they die with their creator.
They fade with her age.
They slink away like timid men
When they should live upon the page

As immortal as sonnets.
As potent as spells.
As compelling as the epics
That troubadours used to tell.

So sit with me in my kitchen.
Stay with me for the night.
Offer me your company
Tell me of your life.

Maybe between the two of us,
Maybe somehow together,
We can make some sense of these crazy times
Or we can shut out the world forever!
