I Do Not Fit Poem by Teresa Woods

I Do Not Fit

Do not judge or hate me, you do not know me
I am a wife, and a mother, I am a sister and a daughter
I am a lover and a friend; I am a nameless face in the crowd,
I am the face you see in the mirror every morning
I am white, black, Hindu, and Swahili
I do not fit in the box you keep trying to put me in
There is so much more to me than you will ever know
I have weaknesses and disabilities
I have great strengths and I can do anything
I am a complex individual, with many facets to me
I am a simple creature who only needs love
I am a walking contradiction
But everything about me makes perfect sense
You see only one piece of me, not the whole puzzle
Quite trying to define me by that one small piece
I am everything you think of me and none of it at all
I fit in no box, for there is nothing that can contain my soul
