I Dream A World Poem by Langston Hughes

I Dream A World

Rating: 3.1

I dream a world where man
No other man will scorn,
Where love will bless the earth
And peace its paths adorn
I dream a world where all
Will know sweet freedom's way,
Where greed no longer saps the soul
Nor avarice blights our day.
A world I dream where black or white,
Whatever race you be,
Will share the bounties of the earth
And every man is free,
Where wretchedness will hang its head
And joy, like a pearl,
Attends the needs of all mankind-
Of such I dream, my world!

The poetry of Langston Hughes is important even today. I use Hughes' poetry in my classroom. The poems serve to inspire students to think about each line. Then they can create new poems which reflect their own experiences. Hughes often speaks of dreams.Hold fast to dreams, he says. Our students have dreams and aspirations. And as teachers, we can even dream for them before they are able to dream. We can nourish and protect these dreams as we provide the skills and abilities which they need to flourish. That's what teachers do!
