I See You Kneel And Pray Poem by Gert Strydom

I See You Kneel And Pray

On the white beach I see you kneel and pray
and I wonder what you are asking from God, who is omnipotent,
across the water the hot sun gleams white
and it's as if your sincere prayer has power.
I am surprised and totally speechless
when you stand on Red-square in a uniform,
with other female-soldiers when Putin does pass
and you in his army I cannot comprehend,
where I know how the Russians do plunder and rape,
how terribly they commit war-crimes,
where I only expect the worst from them
and I wonder if you do nurse as a doctor
but notice a medal proudly on your breast
and you are pretty, a woman with character.
