I Thought That You Would Know

I thought that you would know
which way the yellow road was turning
when you stood by me

in the pink sunset.

but many emerald years have gone
and the grass has
grown over

our former kingdoms

and I am clasping only
the wind's brief hand:
crossing the sea

that once was land-
