'I'Ve Taken Back My Life' Poem by Deborah Greene

Through years of hurt, anguish, heartache, and pain,
I’ve been wearing a smile to mask my inner shame.
I didn’t even want anyone to know my name.
‘I’ was responsible, but ‘you’ are to blame!
I’ve hidden the truth. It’s buried deep inside.
Covered by the shimmering slits that I call eyes.
I learned to love my brother but ‘you’, I despise.
It’s time for me to break free from ‘your’ horrible disguise.
I’ve followed your lead in this dance called life.
Sailing ‘your’ seas of misery and strife.
Sliding down the sharp edge of your gruesome knife;
Submitting myself to you, as though ‘I' were your wife.
It’s time that I take back what doesn’t belong to you.
Satan, notice is served, your reign in me is through.
I’ve replaced you with a Savior whose love for me is true.
God loves me inspite of; and what do you do?
You accuse me of the sins that are deep in my past.
God has forgiven me. Your accusations won’t last.
For I grow closer to Him each time I pray or fast.
The freedom God has given me can never be surpassed.
There’s a peace like no other that soothes my very soul.
It fills me with the knowledge that God is in control.
He guides my every footstep. My life He does hold.
What God has given me is more precious than ‘your’ gold.
I see you sitting there. A puzzled look upon your face.
Don’t understand what’s going on? I’m saved by God’s grace.
He’s given me the power to run this awesome race.
And believe me, when it’s done, I won’t be in second place.
So, I’ve taken back my life and placed it where it belongs.
And the anger that was in my heart is replaced with a song
Of praise for my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, God’s Son.
I’ll hear five words you’ll never hear: “Servant of God, Well Done! ”
