I Want To Tell A Happy Story: Part 2 Poem by Paula Glynn

I Want To Tell A Happy Story: Part 2

I was a fish in the water
I would swim like a mythological mermaid
Where broken hearts I would save
And of the deep blue water I was never afraid
Even in the depths of the turbulent ocean.

I loved airplanes and often went flying
I would go through the endless blue sky
Like a bird of prey that felt no fear:
Who would even think birds fear being up high?
My soul resonating with the power of the sky.

I got a terrified and exciting thrill as a young adult
When going on frightening rollercoasters:
Rollercoasters that seemingly change gravity
Their forces somehow dangerous but not so
The vivacious neon funfair to which every Friday I did go.

I spent valuable time with friends and family
I shared my problems and was cleverly honest
Knowing some things best left unsaid
For I need to pay for shelter, water and bread
My family needing my support without dread.

I attended fantastic theatre shows and the cinema
I loved the glamorous look of the Hollywood stars
Their magic going far: above the clouds
Their characters sometimes outrageously loud
Their characters sometimes prim and proud.

I did it all and saw it all: knowing I wouldn't fall
I rebuilt a weak and crumbling wall
That were my disastrous emotional boundaries
But at 75 years old I know much more than I did
And lucky I am to have a generous artistic gift.
