I Won The Lottery Poem by Paula Glynn

I Won The Lottery

I won the lottery a few years ago now,
And now I'm left here with debts,
My friends long since disappeared.
Money is not the root of all evil,
Despite what your priest may say,
But money attracts evil and users,
It tricks the mind into safety,
It uses you, like the others,
Out of the woodwork.
We all run the risk of spiralling down,
But we can do something about it,
Don't fall for their lies and games,
Don't spend money out of shame,
Only buy what you really want,
What you can really use,
And don't let them trick you,
Their smiles hiding cruelty,
Happy to turn your coins into blood money,
Like the scoundrels they are,
And you think you're the star,
But you're not, for it's a trick of the light,
As they look at their poverty,
Knowing it's forever, but for you it's not,
It's a gift from god to win the lottery,
And they say a fool is quickly parted,
With his money, and I agree,
Although I can understand the struggle,
Life an ongoing battle to make money,
And have everyone live in equality,
And be friends with our fellow man,
And draw out money from the bank,
Living in safety, peace and luxury,
And that is what winning the lottery,
Should be about: having expensive jewels,
And seeing how everybody lives,
For this is the real world,
But entertainment can be fun,
And there're good times to be had,
The lottery taking you places,
But don't let yourself sink:
Rise to the top, like an airplane,
And look to that stranger and stop and think.
