If I Die Poem by Randy McClave

If I Die

If I die before my dog does
Let him see my body first,
Then my dog will know him I did love
Please, make sure the water dish his full for thirst.
Let him sniff me if wants
And let him lay or sit beside me there,
Maybe he'll remember my commandments
And how for him I did love and did care.
The reason why that I want you to do this
Dogs truly do understand death,
Then he will understand why there is no pat, rub or kiss
While by my chest he senses and sees no breath.
When my life comes to an end
And if my dog is still living,
Remember he was truly my best friend
Love and support he was always giving.
Let him lay there at my side
For the very last time,
Don't let him think that from him I did hide
That would be such a terrible crime.
Please, please do this for me
This will be my last ever doggish whim,
I want him to know he was the best friend there could be
And I don't want to think, that I abandoned him.
