If we loved the poor, destitute, homeless, oppressed—
for one whole day—then come morning,
we'd awaken with this thought:
by widening love's reach, we could embrace humanity.
And if we loved the whole year round,
a clear horizon would hover before us—
an idea that, unlike the pale light of yesteryears,
our love would burn brighter, ever brighter,
igniting new stars for all tomorrows to come.
And if we could manage such a miracle,
it would be a healing gift, a praise sung through history—
for in such love lies the secret
to a life lived in peace.
