If You Are A God Fearing Person Poem by Francis Duggan

If You Are A God Fearing Person

If I were a religious person what a hypocrite I would be
Since I am a very flawed fellow and sad to say many like me
Who are members of a religious congregation and go to their house of worship to pray
They think that to their God they are close but from their God they are further away
Than even the religiously unattached atheist who in a God does not believe
At least if an atheist is flawed her or his own self they do not deceive
Into any false illusions of goodness to our own selves we ought to be true
If you are a God fearing person your clean pathway to heaven pursue
By helping those who are less privileged and even going out of your way
To lend your support to some poor stranger and in so doing do your one good deed for the day,
Your actions speak more than your words do that is and was always the case
And 'tis hypocritical to say you are a God fearing person if your humanity you do not embrace
And if you are a God fearing person to your higher self you ought to live
For your God with you will not be happy if you always take more than you give.
