If You Go Higher - Ok, Let You Go! Poem by Liza Sud

If You Go Higher - Ok, Let You Go!

On your program with Ibragimbekov
he said that Fasts are futile, in vain.
and you nodded! But were you both checking?
it's not serious, bad, Micha-el!

I was reading in Sulam's 'Shamati':
between two lights - the Jewish is strong!
that is gnawing me, but... doesn't matter.
If you go higher - OK, let you go!

***

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Daniel Brick 14 October 2016

I don't know the context of this poem, there are terms that need defining for my understanding. But am I right in this conclusion: What you are reading and learning about Judaism is very inspiring, but the gap between what you experience as the truth of Christianity and its absence in Judaism is painful to you, but you acknowledge the Judaic path will take devout Jews higher, so you encourage them to ascend according to THEIR BELIEFS, not yours. If so, that's the attitude Jews will respect. That's what my student Hannah meant when she thanked for seeing her Judaism as an end in itself and not just a temporary stage before Christianity replaced it. Just think of this: Muslims call the Quran both THE CORRECTION and THE COMPLETION. In other words, both earlier revelations are incomplete and thus wrong, so convert to Islam. Does that argument convince you to convert to Islam and deny Christianity and Christ? No, of course not. It probably strengthens your faith to have it challenged. And that's what Jews have been confronting for centuries: Christians who want them to deny Judaism and be assimilated. Mahler had to officially be baptized a Roman Catholic before he was allowed to conduct the Vienna Opera Company. And Arnold Schoenberg had to become a Christian to receive a teaching license in Vienna. He later returned to Judaism and wrote his opera MOSES UND ARON and several settings of the PSALMS. Jews are painfully aware of stories like these. As my teacher at Hamline University told our class, ONE JEW IS TOO MANY.
