In Central Now I Am Standing Like A Lamp Post

Rating: 5.0

'Central - a metro station in the center of the city of joy - Calcutta'

In Central now I am standing like a lamp post
Stoic in some frenzy; yell from a steamer nearby,
cuts the silence into fragments,
inside my existance
Beneath the Shahid Minar
all the pigeons gone; now shrouded glory for a chilly winter
Like a long dead white woman patrols sublime
In front the meadows of Maidan looking foggy dense
All the trees are sleeping; inside nests, the baby birds
warming within some mother's breast
Behind; the Writers' Building
floating in coma,
Red bricks hush,
Ghosts inside tired for a nap,
On right, the Eden Garden quite and sombre
Behind him, the Ganges floating serene
now puts him into sleep,
the match has ended long before
On left, the Esplanade walks like a dead man
The Grand, towering in whiteness
The ghost of British Empire, now bemoaning

In Central now I am standing like a lamp post.

Shamik, this is a brilliant imagination...while going through it, for a moment I was almost transported there...Being a resident of Central I could feel each and every word of yours. This is simply lovely one! ! ! Thanks for considering Central as one of your subject line. I love this place.

I fully endorse your views while enjoying this poem! Having spent my school days in Royd St., - the Maidan was the breathing lungs of grand old Cal! Last year when I visited after a decade, I missed that old Cal! The old book shops of College St. have given away to only prescribed text books! Those rare books have vanished! The flyover over at Park St. looked like an odd-man-out! Metro was a boon for crowded Cal though! Thanks for sharing! 10 + -Raj Nandy
