In Memory Of A Chicken That Was A Friend Poem by Uma Pochampalli Goparaju

In Memory Of A Chicken That Was A Friend

Elegant and graceful, always lending a ear
So lovable were you pecking far and near
Your plumes so colorful, eager to be near
In heavens you are at rest, as I long to hear

Bitten by cat that stole a moment to lunge
Unaware I was at school playing in the lounge
When I returned in vain I saw you plunge
sacrificed in gravy bowl at dinner and lunch

My heart bled as I saw you in that form
Where can I ever find you to rest my arm
On the door of the petite poultry farm
As I talk of my day's good things or harm

My lovely pet, on that day that you are gone,
I felt so sad and could not eat my dinner even,
Although I am alone, I know will get back again
Of days past and harms that are never meant
