In The Line Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

In The Line

In the line

For fuel I stood in long line
-unlike the others I
-wore smile…
-behind the curtain I
-hung many memories…
-of Iran and fuel, strikes
-and trucks of army
-…carrying passengers…
-and also Kuwaitis
-…in the cars, by all means…
-…escaping Saddam's bombs
-…there remained the poor maids
-…Indians, labourers
-…the workers
-…no bread, no water and no life
-…brutal were masters…
-…had left them as if were animals
-…came trucks and planes…
-…thanks to the NGOs and UN…
-…and they ran like the wolves…
-…hungry and in packs…
-…by TV you sat and…
-…pomegranate…
-you cracked…
-senselessly…
-wild and mean:
-'Look at these animals…'

The line was too slow
-for sake of price rise
-reported for tonight

I smiled and smiled and smiled
-with question on my mind:
-'And what if…? '

I smiled and smiled and smiled
-I wonder what they thought
-seeing me in smile…
-'Look at this animal? ? ? '
