In The Vacuum Of Your Eyes Poem by Mark Heathcote

In The Vacuum Of Your Eyes

In the vacuum of your eyes
Why do I pretend we can still be friends?
When I know it's the beginning to the end
Why do I cry without a tear?
Or sing without a song.
It's now, I know there must be something wrong.
Darling, why do the blackbirds look sullen again?
Why do the magpies perch on a branch?
And caw like there is nothing precious to be sung at all.
Darling in the vacuum of your eyes
There is sometimes a soft willow bud.
Promising to open, but darling, it never does.
It just leaves me looking at the moon.
Thinking death can't come too soon.
Looking into the vacuum of your eyes
I'm like a linen cloth on a loom.
Wondering why I can't stretch anymore.
Without unravelling to find my fraying end is unspooled
Knowing now we can never, never be friends once again.
Lovers to the end.
Looking at the vacuum that is now me and you.
In the vacuum of your eyes
Why do I pretend we can still be friends?
When I know it's the beginning to the end
Why do I cry without a tear?
Or sing without a song.
It's now, I know there must be something wrong.
