Mani Shankar Iyer-former Indian diplomat
and former Minister; now a Congress leader

Kasuri is a former Pakistan Foreign Minister

The two leaders are close friends from the days
they were students at Cambridge.

They are always seen to be striving to improve
bilateral relations.

Kasuri was in Delhi on a private visit. Iyer arranged
dinner for his friend and invited some dignitaries like
Dr.Manmohan Singh, a former Indian Army Chief, Pakistan Ambassodor in Delhi... etc and were discussing Indo-Pak relations and what steps are needed to improve the hostile relations.

At this time the hotly contested Gujarat election campaigning was in progress. BJP appeared to be on the losing ground.

When the news of the dinner was learnt the next day, it became a hot issue for BJP which accused Iyer of colluding with Pak to destabilize India.Even the PM spoke along these lines. This was a major controversy at that time
Kulbhushan Jadhav is a former Indian Naval officer, alleged Indian spy, now on death row in Pakistan. This is another burning issue, as Indians believe that Jadhav is innocent and was kidnapped from Iran where he has business interests after retiring from Indian navy.
