You can treat all twists of life as fodder
for esthetic inspiration,
but are quite entitled to embroider,
jettisoning reservation,
the facts that are the Vorlage of art,
which do not need to correspond
to those interpretations you impart,
provided that their features bond
to brain reality, and not whole cloth,
with twists of life mere decoration:
for artists to the truth don’t plight their troth,
but pledge it to imagination.
