Iron Hand, Velvet Glove Poem by narayana aghalaya

Iron Hand, Velvet Glove

there were hundreds of Princely states
Patel told them: ' accede soon not late '

to each he offered a privy purse
as fear, of.life-style loss, they nursed

with no options left, all fell in line
three rebelled and refused to sign

Junagadh's.Nawab was to Pak inclined
Bhutto* prodded: ' with Pak let us bind'

Patel sent columns of troops, just.to show
Nawab ran away with mentor in tow

Hyderabad's Nizam was defiant
his Razakars, were quite.violent

Patel's police-action was, bloody
soon the Nizam, to sign, got ready

Kashmir.was chaos, a big mess
Pak's actions, brought the King, much distress

Patel sent troops; much area, was saved
Nehru misjudged, to dispute way paved

India remains mostly, united
for this, Patel.should.be.credited

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
31st Octoberis Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the Iron Man of India 1875-1950. He was largely responsible for the integration of India which had 562 princely states at the time of independence. He advised the Princes and maharajas to accede to India in their own interest. They had the option to join Pakistan. Most of them agreed, except three states- Junagadh, Jammu and Kashmir and Hyderabad.Patel handled these three deftly and managed to get them on board. A part of Kashmir was lost due to aggression by Pakistan, This is now history.

* Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto, was mentor to Junagadh Nawab and a Minister in Bombay Presidency; the father of future PM of Pakistan Zulfiqur Ali Bhutto.

A beautiful tribute to the Iron Man of India... Sardar Vallabhai Patel on his birthday! Sadly, the new generation doesn't give the respect due to him, as his efforts in unifying India is not properly remembered and highlighted. Thanks for sharing so much of information which has helped me in brushing up the memory.
