It Doesn'T Have To Be This Way Poem by Billy Henderson

It Doesn'T Have To Be This Way

1. Progress is a fine thing, but it sometimes goes too far,
Get out there and see the world, but not from in your car.
Don't be a couch potato, switch off that T. V.
Go take a hike or get on your bike,
There's umpteen things to see

Chorus
An alternative solution to the industrial revolution,
Is spreading round the land in leaps and bounds.
Go and ask your Nanny,
Better still, consult your Grannie,
Ring in the old in your Transition Towns.

2. We can't bring back the Clydesdale, we can't bring back the plough,
But we can bring back old virtues, which alas are missing now.
Support your local 'Thrift Shop', plant a tree or two,
Mend that tear in the ozone layer.
It's up to me and you.

3. The world's a big allotment to which all of us have to tend,
Share your talents, lend a hand, it's worth it in the end.
Call in to your agéd neighbour, share a pot of tea,
Patch up your frocks and darn your socks,
And sing along with me
