I've Been Poem by Mark Heathcote

I've Been

I've been a heavyweight.
I've been a feather in the wind.
I've been a knife threatening your life.
I've been a beacon of light on Christmas Eve.
I've been a thief and a drunkard.
A two-faced liar you want to put straight
Even if it's only for one night
Even if it's only by mistake
A tortured hour in error
I've been your lover…
But you threw the first stone.

I've been a substantial burden.
I've been a dancer moving gracefully.
I've been a stinging nettle swiping left to right.
I've been a dandelion angelic on the breeze.
I've been a vocal infant at play.
Taking what's mine
And darling, you are mine.
And it was for more than one night.
And it wasn't a mistake.
And there wasn't a minute of regret.
Only a second for a sigh!
Like I said, I've been your lover.
But you threw the first stone.
So, let's now end as friends.
