Just A Modicum Poem by Raymond Farrell

Just A Modicum

What do those of us
Who are not members of the privileged few
Pray for, crave, desire, hope for?
Those lying in the gutter of life
Do not want a palace
Or a fabulous fairytale existence
We know this is impossible
In a world that is in decline
All we want is just a modicum
Of the ingredients needed to exist
Without fear of hunger and disease
Ravaging us and our loved ones
Justice that is honest and true
So we are not persecuted
For our beliefs
Freedom that is not unjustly constrained
Tolerance for those who are different
But not threatening
To our society and our well-being
Anything any normal person
Needs to live in peace and flourish
To raise their families and provide
The opportunity for a better future
We desire a modicum of these ingredients
We are not greedy
Unlike the billionaire class
Who want to suck the life blood
Out of everyone and everything
They can exploit
But because our modest hopes
Clash with theirs
We are left drowning in despair.
