Kissing You Daily Still Poem by Bill Galvin

Kissing You Daily Still

(Now that you’ve gone
What helps me to carry on
Is a memorial pendant
With your remains
Which hangs around my neck…)

As morning breaks
Or at times of joy
Or to decompress
Excusing any ploy
At times of stress
I lift you to my lips
Absentmindedly
As my fingertips
Are wont to toy
Too nervously
So I plant a kiss
Or two, or three
All we have now is
Such sweet reverie.

When I see a view
That brings awe to me
I know you’d too
React excitedly
So I sneak a kiss
Or two, or three
It’s what we know of
Our sweet memory.

As I sit and write
With elbow bent
And hand to chin
Author’s element
I sometimes find
To my heart’s content
I’ve reached for you
Put you to my lips
Like a mantric deed
Done repeatedly
Calming and freed
But abstractedly
Your essence seeds
And releases words
For my soliloquies.

Good times or not
What were to be
You’d close your eyes
Responsively
As I’d approach
When you were here
To place a kiss
Or two, or three
Upon your lips
And begin our dance
Toward eternity.

You might say today
Seems quite silly
But all the while
“That is my Willy
Sometimes he does things
Embarrassingly
But his heart is true
And he’s been good for me”
(You told me that
And it stays with me
That you validated
What I prayed to be) .

So from here we see
With you up there
(In good company)
And me down here
Still on this plane
Feeling so sincere
And somewhat sane
As I find excuse
To steal a kiss
Or two, or three
Even in our car
Driving fast and free
No matter where we are
Wandering aimlessly
Or with a plan
We know the gesture
Suspends reality
But I tell you this
With utmost certainty
When my grief is deep
As a surrounding sea
I see a raft that
Will be grounding me
So I would be remiss
If I didn’t try
To plant a kiss
Or two, or three
As if nothing’s changed
Babe, just you and me
As we travel onward
Still so compatibly.
