Kyrie Eleison Poem by Barry Middleton

Kyrie Eleison

there is no mercy in this world
no lord inspires the rabble
fear is the greatest enemy
but it has been given a throne

we fashion weapons and wait
but the enemy is invisible
so we build our totems
and offer sacrifice in blood

the demon is not beyond us
mystics know its hiding place
they hear it in the heart of man
beating with a primal rhythm

mankind searches for a symbol
for an emblem of deliverance
but the beast cannot be killed
our fears nominate it as king

in the final desperate act
innocence and reason are blind
humanity teeters on a precipice
above a vast and ruthless sea
