L'arbre De La Vie Est Tombe.(Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

L'arbre De La Vie Est Tombe.(Translation) .

Mon bateau est grand et j'en donne encore des ordres au capitaine;
non pas appris a naviguer moi-meme.
Mais je suis a la derive
sans mon arbre de la vie
qui est tombe lourd
sans grace ni pitie
sur ce petit batiment.
Pour le dictateur partant, en perpetuite.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
See Poem Hunter/ Alice Walker/ Poems/ 16/27 for the original.
In a literal sense, the tree of life has fallen on her small house. Her house has a commanding view of the mountains and ocean.
Alice Walker's father, Willie Lee, died in 1973, having worked hard for low wages as a sharecropper all his life: Mr. Walker and his wife had eight children. For Alice, her father was her 'tree of life', whom she loved, but also 'the departing dictator' as he did not sympathize with Alice's writing and lifestyle. Willie Lee thought that the role of women in a family was 'to love, honour and obey'. Alice would not entirely agree, since she was a women's liberation feminist, which shows in her poems and novels.
