L'automne.(Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

L'automne.(Translation) .

Il a dit l'histoire de sa vie a Mme. Courtly
Qui etait veuve. 'Marions-nous bientot',
Dit-il. 'Je ne suis plus passionne,
Mais nous pouvons nous entretenir avant qu'il ne soit trop tard'.

-'Autumn'. Stevie Smith(1902-1971)

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Poem Hunter/ Stevie Smith/ poems/ 2/41.
The couple are getting old: she is a widow. The man proposes marriage to her, so that they can converse together-for company. He is no longer passionate. The French call this 'un mariage de convenance'.
I would prefer to stay single, independent, and free. I think this is Stevie Smith's view also.
