L'echelle.(Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

L'echelle.(Translation) .

Et, comme vous voyez, elle est pourrie,
Neanmoins, elle desire beaucoup a etre leve.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
He writes of an old, rotten ladder lying on its side behind the house, out of sight. Regardless of its shortcomings, the ladder wants very much to be lifted. I think Manhire is referring to both the literal and figurative meanings of 'lifted' here. The ladder wants to be physically lifted, but through personification, it simultaneously wants the sort of lift which people feel when something good happens to them.
