Quand ils torturent votre mere
plantez un arbre
Quand ils torturent votre pere
plantez un arbre
Quand ils torturent votre fere
et votre soeur
plantez un arbre
Quand ils assassinent vos leaders
et vos amants
plantez un arbre
Quand ils vous torturent
trop fort
pour parler
plantez un arbre.
Quand ils commencent a torturer
les arbres
et abattre leforet
qu'ils ont fait
commencez un autre.

'Torture'.Alice Walker (b.1944) .
This very much a 'green' poem, in which Walker puts her faith in planting trees whenever anyone in your family is tortured. Obviously, the tree will replace torture and live a very long time. If a whole forest gets cut down, she advises, 'start another'. I liked the repetition of 'when they torture', and 'plant a tree', which make for compellingrhetoric.
