Laborer's Brainchild, The Nine -Arch Bridge Poem by Jayatissa K. Liyanage

Laborer's Brainchild, The Nine -Arch Bridge

Rating: 4.3

Its a bridge, bridging a gap hundred meters wide
its a bridge meant to link two large mountains
its a bridge, to cross a stream nearly thirty meters below
its a bridge none ever thought would amuse the world

its a bridge no Engineer or Technician had hands on
its a bridge conceived in a laborer's cerebral womb
its a bridge created by none-professional bloke
its a bridge came in to being through efforts of a labor gang

its a bridge made out only of natural rock bricks and cement
its a bridge made without any metal on any structural part
its a bridge that took eight years to complete, and
its a bridge no Engineer thought would ever emerge

its a bridge, purely based on and worked with a perceptual picture
its a bridge put up sans any design drawing or estimate
its a bridge even after completion, Masters didn't dare believe
its a bridge of a near century still exists in its original form

its the bridge professionals frightened to run trains on
its the bridge of which creator confidence was hundred percent
its a bridge more people enjoy admiring than crossing
its a bridge, which the world ranks "only one of the kind"

its a bridge where a laborer scored above the boss, at last
its a bridge at the sametime saved the face of the Engineer in-charge
its a bridge the creator lied underneath and ordered train to move on
its a bridge still exists in the same original form and function

Creator, Appuhamy the trusted genius is no more
Nonetheless, his bridge aptly cares locomotives on the go
Visitor from all walks of life admire and enjoy seeing
whilst blissed maestro Appuhamy, relishes from heaven

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
During the colonial era (1913)English Engineer who was constructing the railway line from Colombo to the Hill-country had to erect an iron bridge over a gap between two hills. Nearly hundred feet below was a stream running over a marsh. He, as usual ordered a pre-fabricated iron bridge from England for the place. Later upon receiving the bridge he realized that it was not long enough to connect two ends. Engineer being so embarrassed and upset about it, was to commit suicide. At this moment his best laborer PK Appuhamy (1885 - 1951)who had never been to a school came forward to undertake the job without any salary. Appuhamy instead asked for only about hundred men and few elephants. It had taken eight years for him to complete the job. When everything was ready for the maiden train journey over the bridge, Engineer was still not sure about its strength to carry the load safely. Appuhamy then has said to his panicked Engineer "Please don't worry, I'll go down with my team and sleep underneath you take the train over my bridge". Train ran over it easily and Engineer immediately reported it to Colombo. Later, Engineer had worked out Appuhamy's salary for the entire period and given him 8 sacksful of coins. Using a part of it, he had bought a car and donated to the Engineer in return. Uniqueness about this is that not a wee bit of any metal had been used in the structure. This may be viewed in the U-tube (Nine-arch bridge of Sri Lanka) .

A wonderful story beautifully conveyed and crafted. Very inspiring. I will read next time the Poet's Notes. A lot of advertisements blocked the poem and Poet's Notes making them inaccessible to readers. I have to go through several times on this beautiful poem just to read but the time spent is worth after reading this enlightening write.

Sometimes if we put our heart, mind and trust in our work, we can make something people could rely on for many years even beyond time. A great work need not be done by highly skilled or highly educated man. It is enough that we dedicate ourselves and put all our efforts on the work we aimed to do and make a difference.
