Ellie of the Cathedral Green
On a bench on the green old Ellie sat like a queen
imperfect and undone she would linger in the sun
And away in her past she would chatter rather fast
In an Irish sort of way of a neater, cleaner day.
She was so often seen on the bench on the green
with her tights round her feet and her life on her sleeve
she was eager to tell and was fun to percieve
she had cared for a canon a very good man and
He died in the spring and one time she could sing and the
Sister she loved lost her leg and her love
In the war, in the war or was it just before?
Ellie' s life was a song which had gone slightly wrong but
On a bench on the green she was a Blarney queen
And I passed every day where she chattered away
and she gave me her her tales as I walked to the sales
On a bench, on green Ellie sat like a queen
With egg on her face and washed by the weather
She was carving her name on the bench there..forever!
A vivid word portrait of a lady who deserves to be remembered. Excellent work, Yvonne. Kindest regards, Sandra
Very affectionate portrait of a settled soul hovering just on the outside. Nonetheless ono of a kind. The careful language choices and ambling rhythm give the piece a mythic coloration.
