Il est minuit.
Il vient en montant le sentier
et frappe a la porte.
Je me precipite l'accueillir.
Il se tient debout la, en pleurant,
en agitant une lettre devant moi.
Il me dit qu'elle contient
des nouvelles terribles et personelles.
'Pardonnez-moi! Pardonnez-moi! ' supplie-t-il.
Je lui invite en dedans.
Il essuie les yeux.
Son costume bleu fonce
est comme une tache d'encre
sur mon canape cramoisi.
Impuissant, nerveux, petit,
il se blottit comme une balle
et s'endort pendant que je compose
plus de lettres a moi-meme
dans la meme veine:
'Tu vivras
en infligeant la douleur.
Tu pardonneras.'
