Leaving Me Behind Poem by Sarah Child

Leaving Me Behind

You stand before me-
Ready to leave me behind
Your cold bottomless eyes pierce my soul
And your hand rests on my cheek
We stand there like statues
As if our legs were made of lead
A single tear runs down my cheek-landing on your hand
Soaking into your skin and spreading through your body
With one fluid movement-
You make my eyes close and my legs buckle
You sweep me up-and gently lay me on the soft grass
Kissing my forehead-and whispering into my ear-
That you love me
Then without looking back
You walk away
And fade into the mist
