Leaving Our Mark Poem by cheryl davis miller

Leaving Our Mark

I looked into her bedroom
while on late rounds that night.
She sat there in her rocker
bathed in a golden light.

I walked in to ask her, 'Is
there anything you need'?
She sat with open Bible
prepared for nightly read.

Her gaze then shifted upward
these words she softly said,
'More years now lay behind me
than those that lay ahead'.

I asked her, 'Are you frightened,
are you prepared to go'?
She answered, 'I'm as ready
as any soul can know.

This life is but a montage
of moments spent in time
dancing through our memories
and rambling through our mind.

If there's someone to share them
they go on for an age.
If not they're gone when you go
like someone turned a page.

Those near and dear to our hearts
will the most likely be,
'marked' well by our life's journey
and a shared memory.

It's not earthly achievements
nor accolade's of men
that retell our life-story
when once our lives do end.

No it's the lives we have touched
the love that we have shone.
Living on in memories
of all those we have known.

Make sure your 'mark' in this world
is one that's crystal clear.
You'll share my peace when you face
your end of days my Dear'.
