Les Deux Poetes.(Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

Habiter le pays par la suite;

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
See Poem Hunter/ H. Lawson/poems/ 427/501.
Henry Lawson was an Australian poet and balladeer of the 19th. and early 20th. centuries. This lyric speaks of two poets born in the same place; one was a poet of sorrow; the other was a poet of jokes and laughter. The poets used simple words and metre to reach a wide, popular audience. Both the light-hearted and the sad of heart listened and felt happy. The glad rejoiced that the world was joyous: the sad of heart felt cheered up to hear of another's misfortune.
All went well until the two poets died, unnoticed. The light-hearted poet was the one who cared, but the sad poet's heart was broken. Quite a subtle poem about appearances and reality.
