Like a star in a fable
Or a prince without a bridesmaid or even a dress.
A groom or a barn
I'll tell you a story about a witch who stole my heart
And if I had a barn, it would be -burning in the snow.
While my freezing fingers tied the hooks and barbs
Just to get hitched to a witch in a burning barn.
Scraping my knife and my knuckles into the bark of an old oak tree
To cut out a love heart in the dark
I'll write you a fable.
That put out all the stars.
And yet I wasn't able to see the wood for trees.
Lord, let the loons holler and the owls shriek.
Lord, let the wolves howl and the lowly beasts bellow.
I'll still burn in the barn.
And thinks it's a dance in the park.
If a prince came here as a July bride to steal my heart
Oh, like a star in a fable.
It could only be a dream.
To believe love will turn your blue evenings gold
That nothing more can ever go wrong.
So I sing you this song beneath the rotting fruit.
The fruit that is still on the tree.
Hanging in the knurled, twisting branches
Dreaming of a princess falling to sleep
On a bed of thyme, knowing it won't be long
Till a prince on his horse wakes her from a deep sleep.
From a morphine sweet heady sleep.
